Users Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals using such medications must be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
