In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a new era” and an ambitious commencement to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting advice to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for fear of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these programs may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
