The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Music Legend and Cultural Figure, Dies at Eighty-One Years Old

Global audiences mourns the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican musician and actor whose distinctive vocal talent was instrumental in spreading reggae music across the globe. The artist passed away at the age of eighty-one.

“With deep sorrow that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa on Instagram. “I am grateful for his family, close friends, fellow artists and coworkers who shared his journey. To all his fans around the world, please know that your encouragement was his motivation throughout his entire professional life … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their children, their son and daughter.

Cliff was beloved for hits such as “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, I Can See Clearly Now and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His optimistic sound and uplifting spirit brought him a vast and longstanding following.

Beyond his musical achievements, Cliff starred in the 1972’s crime drama “The Harder They Come”, a performance that was highly acclaimed and is viewed as a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.

He was one of just a handful of artists, including the legendary Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the esteemed Order of Merit from Jamaica.
