A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public works. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national projects.
