Finland Upsets Back-to-Back Reigning Champions US in World Junior Quarterfinal Round.
Arttu Välilä netted the winner at 2:11 of extra time as Finland engineered a remarkable 4-3 win over the two-time defending champion United States on Friday evening in the IIHF World Junior Championship last eight.
"Got to give credit to the US," remarked Finland's leader A. Kiviharju. "They are a hell of a team, full of exceptional individuals and a well coached team. But I said we wanted that payback from the previous final, and I think we truly deserved it tonight."
In the semifinal matches Sunday, Finland will take on the Swedish team, while Canada will play the Czech Republic. The Swedes defeated Latvia 6-3, Team Canada produced a five-goal first period in a seven to one rout over the Slovakian team, and the Czechs topped Switzerland by a six to two margin.
Thrilling Final Frame and Overtime
Michigan State’s Lee Ryker knotted the score for the United States with 1:33 left in the third period and the University of Notre Dame goalie Nick Kempf pulled for an additional skater.
Lee Tuuva and J. Saarelainen found the net in a fifty-five-second span in the third to give their team a 2-1 advantage. He leveled the score at 2 with 7:17 to go, then set up Saarelainen’s go-ahead goal with six minutes and twenty-two seconds remaining. Saarelainen also earned a helper on the first goal.
Notable Contributions and Reactions
The Boston University defenseman Cole Hutson recorded a goal and a helper for the United States after being struck in the head versus the Swiss and missing two games.
"In my opinion we executed well for most of the game," the defenseman commented. "But the small details that they got, a lot of their high-quality chances came from our mistakes."
His university colleague Cole Eiserman handed the U.S. a two to one lead on a power play with 9:45 remaining in the middle frame. He accepted a pass from his teammate and fooled the Finnish goaltender with a quick shot from the right circle.
C. Hutson scored on a fast break 35 seconds into the second. Heikki Ruohonen tied it at 4:46 on a quick shot from the left side.

The U.S. squad lost their last two games – losing 6-3 to the Swedes on Wednesday in the group finale – after winning their initial three matches.

In the late game in Minneapolis, the Canadians overwhelmed Slovakia with the five-goal first.
Cole Reschny, T. Iginla, M. Misa, Sam O’Reilly and B. Martin scored in the first period, and Porter Martone and Cole Beaudoin connected in the second. Jack Ivankovic made 21 saves.
"This demonstrates how dominant we can be," B. Martin said. "Going up 5-0 advantage, it kind of saps their morale."
In the first quarter-final, A. Frondell scored twice for Team Sweden against Latvia. The defenseman Leo Sahlin Wallenius had a goal and two helpers to aid the Swedes remain undefeated in their five outings.
Meanwhile, in Minneapolis Tomas Galvas, S. Drancak, A. Jiricek, P. Sikora, Jiri Klima and J. Fibigr provided the goals for the Czechs.
Relegation Game Outcome
The German team triumphed in the consolation match, beating Denmark 8-4. Manuel Schams scored twice to help his nation retain its place for the following season in the top division. The Danish side dropped to Division I-A.
