Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials voiced anger after former President Donald Trump alleged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "traitors" and declared they should be detained and penalized "through capital punishment" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Recording That Sparked the Dispute
The clip, released on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic congress members who in the past served in armed forces or security positions.
"As we did, you all made an vow to safeguard and uphold this constitution," the representatives stated in the brief video. "At present, the dangers to our constitution don't only come from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our statutes are clear, you can reject improper directives, you can reject improper directives, you should refuse illegal orders. No one has to carry out commands that break the statutes or our constitution."
Trump's Furious Response
The clip reportedly provoke a heated response from the previous commander-in-chief.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another publication, he stated: "This is really bad, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their statements cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Answer
Following Trump's statements on Thursday, Top Democrats published a combined declaration condemning the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no place in this nation," they declared. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all worked our country with exceptional loyalty and honor. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's appalling and harmful death threats against elected officials, and urge Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also said that they had been in touch with protective services "to make certain the protection of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these radical social media posts and withdraw his aggressive language before he causes harm," the declaration added.
Representatives' Strong Answer
The representatives who appeared in the video also released a declaration.
"We identify as veterans and national security professionals who value this country and made an vow to protect and support the constitution of the United States," they said. "Our pledge is permanent, and we plan to maintain it. No intimidation, coercion, or call for violence will deter us from that important responsibility."
"What's most telling is that the president considers it liable to punishment by execution for us to repeat the statutes," they stated. "Armed forces members should know that we have their protection as they execute their pledge to the national charter and obligation to obey only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "Every American must unite and denounce the ex-president's requests for our death and political violence. This is a time for moral clarity."
Further Political Reactions
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's statements and published on social media: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the capital punishment of public representatives."
He stated: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should denounce this immediately and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "It is very harmful, you have important representatives of the government telling military personnel to disobey orders, I think that represents without precedent in the nation's past."
The Republican leader also reportedly stated to journalists that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the crime of rebellion" but that "attorneys have to analyze the wording and decide all that."
Executive Branch Response
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when asked by a media member, "Does the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the executive branch representative answered: "Absolutely not."
"Let's be clear about what the former president is responding to," the representative stated. "You have sitting members of the federal government who conspired to organize a recorded statement to personnel of the national defense, to current military personnel encouraging them to ignore the president's legal commands."
She said: "The sanctity of our armed forces relies on the command structure, and if that chain of command is broken, it can lead to fatalities, it can lead to disorder, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are essentially encouraging."
