There are many contenders to claim the designation as “world’s most significant invention.” The wheel. The printing press. The combustion motor.

As per a recent publication, however, that honor belongs to the mechanised timber mill invented through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.

“Before automated cutting, building a modest trading ship necessitated approximately ten lumberjacks working over three months,” writes the author. “Using wind-driven lumber mills, the same amount of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than a week.”

Thanks to this rapid automated saw, that turned timber to boards using almost no manual labor, Dutch builders could construct vessels faster than anyone else, which sparked a century of Dutch naval, financial as well as artistic supremacy across the continent and the globe.

Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues Dávila, was “humanity’s initial true factory machine.” A windmill rotated a gear. A single part converted its rotary motion to up-and-down motion to power the cutting blade. A separate mechanism changed the rotary motion into a lateral movement advancing the log toward the cutter. A geared mechanism shifted the wood ahead one precise increment per stroke.

“Every component was simple by itself. The Dutchman’s genius lay in how to combine these parts so they acted in a perfectly controlled order, sawing on every downward motion while moving on every upward motion. This constituted an astonishingly clever use of fundamental parts.”
