An Story of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor
During the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I figured to arrange lodging after getting there, yet upon reaching the city, a major event was taking place and every single backpackers hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.
Coming from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the airport – but quickly found the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes around the clock. Unsure of what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I caught a bus into town and started wandering in the direction of a gaming venue, thinking I might spend the night in a place that stayed open through the night. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition to succeed at an interview the next day, yet, as a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
We could all use more folks like that woman.
Apparently, I appeared lost as a female student spotted me walking aimlessly through the city and inquired whether I needed help. I explained my situation and immediately she said I could sleep on the floor at her university residence at the local university – which was perfect, given that my my medical school interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided me some free dinner: a leftover filled rolls she had taken home her work shift. This gave me warm shower facilities and a protected spot and safe for the evening.
Looking back, it’s clear to me the significant risk she accepted as a young woman allowing a man who was a complete stranger crash at her place. In those days I was in a bubble of male privilege and not even thinking to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I am astonished she offered that help – and remain incredibly thankful.
I never did attending that university, and I didn’t meet that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of generosity. I hope life has rewarded her act of kindness abundantly. We could all use more folks with such compassion.
